Healing Horse Whispers Series #4 - When the Horses Remind Us of What Our Bodies Never Forgot

ree

Over the years at Alaya, I’ve witnessed something both heartbreaking and profoundly healing. Again and again, women arrive here, sometimes for yoga, sometimes for coaching, sometimes simply to rest, and somewhere between the quiet breath of a horse and the stillness of the vineyards, something begins to surface.

Often, it’s the pain of sexual abuse, memories long buried, emotions held silently in the body for decades. These are not isolated stories; they are part of a collective wound that many women carry. And what I’ve learned is that the horses always know.

I remember one moment, many years ago, during my training in constellations with horses.

I entered the arena with a woman I was working with. There were twelve horses present that day. As soon as we stepped inside, the entire herd began to mount each other — a spontaneous, almost chaotic reaction that took everyone by surprise. My client burst into tears. When she found her voice, she shared that she had just begun to remember how her uncle had abused her from a very young age. That moment changed me forever.

The horses knew. They sensed it in her energy, in her field — they saw what was invisible to the eye but fully alive beneath the surface. They responded precisely to the truth that was present, something her mind had barely begun to face, but her body remembered completely. Since that day, I often say: “The horses see all that is in your field — the visible and the hidden — and they act upon it to make it visible.”

Here at Alaya, I see this again and again. When trauma — especially sexual trauma — is present, the horses find a way to symbolize, to move, or to make visible the pain of the person before them. They might show agitation, distance, protectiveness, or deep stillness. Through their presence, they reveal what has been buried — always in service of healing. In those moments, an emotional release often follows — deep crying surfaces, and long-held tension begins to dissolve.

Horses don’t need stories or explanations. They simply respond to the truth that vibrates beneath the surface — to the heartbeat, the energy, the pain ready to be seen.

And when that truth is finally acknowledged, something begins to shift. The body relaxes. The soul begins to trust again.

Many women who come to Alaya tell me that the horses helped them remember their innocence, not their violation — that they reconnected with the part of themselves that existed before the fear and the shame. From that space, true healing begins.

What happens here isn’t therapy in the conventional sense. It’s something older, quieter, more instinctive — a language of presence and compassion. The horses act as wise witnesses, helping us see what the soul is ready to transform.

Every time a woman stands beside a horse and allows herself to breathe, to cry, or to simply be, I’m reminded why I was called to create Alaya — not just as a place to practice yoga or stay in nature, but as a true healing sanctuary, where humans and horses meet as authentic souls.

Healing doesn’t always come through words. Sometimes, it comes through a horse who looks straight into your heart and says, without speaking: “I see you. All of you. And it’s safe now.”
